Shopping Safety During the Holidays

STATELINE (WIFR) – Now that the holiday shopping season is in full swing, police want to remind us we’re not the only ones window shopping and thieves could be getting to our presents before we even have time to wrap them.

Officers say we need to put presents directly in the trunk when we leave a store considering all those items can be seen through the back window. It may sound obvious, however police say a lot of people are forgetting to lock their car doors and if we’re shopping solo this season, we’re told it’s much safer to go with a friend during the day.

“I would not go out late at night by myself. I would probably go out in a group, maybe three people or four people and we would stay close together. We would park where the lights are so we can see anything that’s going on," says shopper Dorthea Pagani.

“Any kind of packages you know, especially if they look expensive you want to put them in your trunk or if there’s something little I slide them underneath the seats so they’re not too visible," says shopper Kathy McAnelly.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department has extra patrols in the 173 Shopping Corridor in Machesney Park. Deputies are also helping Rockford Police patrol shopping centers mostly along East State.
