UPDATE: Teen Shot and Killed at Jewelry Concepts Identified

UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Coroner's Office has confirmed that the teen shot in yesterday's attempted robbery is 17-year-old Brandon Pierce. We'll have more on this tonight on the update at 10.

For the second time in a month and a half the same jewelry store is the target of a robbery, but tonight's attempted heist ended fatally.

This is the second time in as many months that Jewelry Concepts at 940 W. Riverside Blvd. in Rockford's North Towne Mall has been a crime scene. The suspects who robbed the store in October got away; tonight's suspect lost his life.

"I was in the back of Talecris and (I heard) two light pops and I'm from the type of neighborhood where I know the noises like that so I assumed right away what it was," said Edward Mendez.

Mendez is talking about gunshots. Police say just before 5 p.m. the suspect walked into the shop with a gun and tried to rob the place but he didn't get far.

"One of the employees of the store confronted the suspect in the armed robbery and did shoot and killed the suspect," said Lt. Marc Welsh with the Rockford Police Department.

North Towne property manager Gus Lamesch heard the commotion.

"I was two doors down with a tenant and I heard something was going down so I came down and just as I was there, the first police car came and had yellow tape and tried to chase everybody away," said Lamesch.

Lamesch says police told him it was the owner who shot the suspect but police wouldn't tell us which employee shot the suspect.

"It's very scary. Typically stuff like that doesn't happen a lot," said Lamesch.

There were other employees in the store at the time but police say no one else was injured. Police are not saying if there were customers in the store during the incident.

Rockford police aren't saying how many times the suspect was shot and they're waiting to release his name until family is notified.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Police are on the scene of a fatal shooting in the 900 Block of West Riverside.

We're told Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato just arrived at the scene.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available.
