Shirland School Named Featured School to be Recognized at Raising Student Achievement Conference

SHIRLAND (WIFR) -- Having achieved its highest ISAT scores ever in both Reading and Math for two years in a row, Shirland School, a Kindergarten through 8th grade rural school of 131 students, was named a Featured School to be recognized at the prestigious Raising Student Achievement Conference 2012 to be held December 3rd and 4th in St. Charles, Illinois.

Shirland School District was also awarded a $3,000 grant to attend the conference which is presented annually by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents in cooperation with the Regional Offices of Education and Intermediate Service Centers.

Additional recipients include Joliet West High School, Westfield Middle School, Stanton Middle School, Yorkville Intermediate School, and Indian Creek High School. Each of the six Featured districts will be recognized during the event’s opening session and will present a special break-out session on their initiatives that led to increased student growth.

Shirland School District has shown three consecutive years of growth since 2009 on the ISAT test and achieved its best ever scores in both Reading and Math in 2011 and 2012. The small, rural school district did this despite significant budget cuts that resulted in a 2012 operating budget that was 13.4% less than the district’s 2009 budget.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized as a Featured School,” Superintendent-Principal John Ulferts said. “I attribute our growth in student achievement to our culture of continuous improvement and our data driven instruction. Our teachers have worked hard implementing new programs and we are excited to be able to share some of our initiatives at the conference.”

These grant dollars have enabled the district to upgrade its facility with new Smartboards and document cameras in nearly every classroom, energy efficient lights and windows, a new Book Room for its guided reading program, and even new scoreboards for the athletics program.
