WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- It was a good day to buckle up the family and take them for a drive out to Severson Dells Forest Preserve Saturday morning. That's because it was the grand opening for a new outdoor facility.
The Grove is constructed primarily of natural materials that provides children with free play opportunities. It took a year and a half to make. The purpose is to bring children back to nature using fallen logs, tree stumps for seating, vertical logs for forts, slides embedded in the side of hills and there's even an area to make music.
"Most of the material here is all natural and kids are being kids. As we were building it we were wondering will kids use it this way, that way, but it's fun to see the kids figure out their own way to use this material," Don Miller, Director of Nature Education, said.
The Grove is the only recreational facility of its kind in the Rockford area and also has a music auditorium.
