UPDATE: STATELINE (WIFR) --The reopening of a number of local crossroad bridges being reconstructed over the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) is scheduled to begin in August and continue into the fall as work is completed to make way for the Illinois Tollway’s $2.5 billion I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project. The Johnson Road Bridge in Boone County is scheduled to reopen today, August 1.
“We are pleased to be able to deliver these newly constructed bridges to these communities and look forward to completing the full rebuilding and widening of the I-90 western segment this fall,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “Throughout construction, our goal has been to minimize the inconvenience of this work on residents and we thank them for their patience during construction.”
In 2014, the Illinois Tollway is reconstructing 11 local crossroad bridges carrying traffic over the I-90 to accommodate the new, wider roadway. The Illinois Tollway completed reconstruction of seven local crossroad bridges in 2013. Altogether, 30 local bridges will be reconstructed between 2013 and 2016 as part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.
In addition to the reopening of the Johnson Road Bridge, local crossroad bridges scheduled to reopen in August include Harmony Road and Hennig Road Bridges in Kane County, County Line Road Bridge in McHenry County and Town Hall Road Bridge in Boone County. In addition, the Shattuck Road and Pearl Street Bridges in Boone County and the Harmony-Riley Road Bridge in McHenry County are scheduled to open later this fall. The Bartlett Road Bridge in Cook County is scheduled to reopen by the end of this year.
Full closure of these local crossroad bridges was necessary because the roadways over I-90 were too narrow to accommodate traffic while completing the I-90 rebuilding work. The bridges, which were originally built in the 1950s, have been lengthened to accommodate the new, wider I-90 roadway.
Work on the Tyrrell Road Bridge in Kane County and the Higgins Road Bridge in Cook County is scheduled to be completed in 2015, as both of these bridges remain open during reconstruction with traffic shifts and lane closures in place.
The local crossroad bridge projects are being coordinated with Winnebago, Boone, DeKalb, McHenry, Kane, and Cook counties and the Illinois Department of Transportation, along with local municipalities, townships, school districts and police and fire departments.
Construction project information was shared with residents via their communities, as well as by the Tollway in the “Projects by Roadway” section in the Construction/Planning section on the Tollway’s website at www.illinoistollway.com.
STATELINE (WIFR) -- Several bridges on I-90 in Boone and McHenry counties are scheduled to close in March for construction. They're expected to be completed in the fall.
According to a press release, the Town Hall Road, Pearl Street, Shattuck Road, County Line Road and Harmony-Riley Road bridges are scheduled to close in March. Two of those bridges -- Town Hall Road and Pearl Street -- are expected to close next week.
Except for the Shattuck Road and County Line Road bridges, detour routes will be posted. For more information, go to the "Projects by Roadway" section in the Construction/Planning section at illinoistollway.com.
These five bridges are among 11 to be removed and reconstructed along I-90 this year. The Johnson Road bridge is also scheduled to close this spring.
Full closure of some of these bridges are necessary because the structures over I-90 are too narrow for traffic to go through during construction.
The locations and detours for each bridge closure are:
- Town Hall Road: The detour will direct traffic to use Graham Road, Stone Quarry Road and U.S. Route 20 in both directions. Up to 550 vehicles use this route daily.
- Pearl Street: The detour will direct traffic to use U.S. Route 20, Stone Quarry Road and Bates Road in both directions. Up to 3,250 vehicles use this route daily.
- Johnson Road: Bridge closure with detour details will be scheduled later this spring. Up to 100 vehicles use this route daily.
- Shattuck Road: Bridge closure but no detour posted. Up to 300 vehicles use this route daily.
- Harmony-Riley Road: The detour will direct traffic to use State Street, U.S. Route 20, Garden Prairie Road and Crawford Road in both directions. Up to 1,700 vehicles use this route daily.
- County Line Road: Bridge closure but no detour posted. Up to 275 vehicles use this route daily.
