On 04/22/2013 at 6:24 PM, Rockford Police responded to a serious one vehicle crash in approximately the 500 block of North 6th Street.
Upon arrival, the initial investigation indicated that a 1996 Blue Mercury Cougar had been southbound on North 6th Street from the Whitman Street bridge interchange when it left the roadway, rolling over, and striking a light pole on the east side of the street.
The driver, Samantha Mitchell (27), a Rockford resident, was transported to St. Anthony Hospital. She was treated for minor injuries and released. She was later cited for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. She was left in the custody of the Winnebago County Jail.
A 6 year old female passenger was transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries. She is listed in critical condition. Four other occupants of the vehicle were treated for various injuries at local hospitals. Their injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.
Preliminary information indicates that excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
The charges are merely accusations. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation is on-going.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford mother is jail tonight after she's accused of driving drunk and causing a rollover crash that sent five others to the hospital, including four kids.
The crash happened Monday night just before 6:30 p.m. at 6th Street and the North 2nd Street interchange. Police say the driver, Samantha Mitchell, 27, was heading southbound on North 6th Street from the Whitman Street bridge when she lost control of her car, rolling it over, and smashing into a light pole on the east side of the street.
A six-year-old girl was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries. We're told she is in critical condition. Four others, one adult and three children, were inside the car at the time of the crash. They were treated for non-life threatening at local hospitals.
Mitchell was treated for minor injuries at St. Anthony Medical Center. She was released to Rockford police and now is in the Winnebago County Jail for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
The crash is still under investigation but police say preliminary information indicates excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
Right now information is limited but we do know multiple ambulances have been sent to the scene. More tonight on the 23 News Update at 10.
