ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford mother is jail tonight after she's accused of driving drunk and causing a rollover crash that sent five others to the hospital, including four kids.

The crash happened Monday night just before 6:30 p.m. at 6th Street and the North 2nd Street interchange. Police say the driver, Samantha Mitchell, 27, was heading southbound on North 6th Street from the Whitman Street bridge when she lost control of her car, rolling it over, and smashing into a light pole on the east side of the street.

A six-year-old girl was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries. We're told she is in critical condition. Four others, one adult and three children, were inside the car at the time of the crash. They were treated for non-life threatening at local hospitals.

Mitchell was treated for minor injuries at St. Anthony Medical Center. She was released to Rockford police and now is in the Winnebago County Jail for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

The crash is still under investigation but police say preliminary information indicates excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
