ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on defense appropriations. Earlier this week approved over $350 million in funding for the Iron Dome System that intercepts short range missiles. 23 News Anchor Mike Garrigan asked the senator if he was optimistic a ceasefire may come anytime soon.
"There's nothing at this point that would to suggest a ceasefire is likely. But I'm glad that Secretary Kerry is still working in the region to try to bring some leadership to this effort. But when I hear about the kids from Gaza who were killed at the school or hear about the deaths or kidnappings of Israeli soldiers you know that innocent people are suffering," Durbin said.
Durbin told me he is saddened to see loss of life on either side but he could understand Israel responding when two thousand rockets have been fired over the last two weeks at innocent civilian population in their country.
