ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- An idea by a Rockford boy has led to the collection of more than one ton of school supplies, that's now ready to be handed out to low-income students this fall.
Rockford MELD says a 12-year-old boy started collecting used school supplies as part of his youth group at church three years ago.
He asked local schools to have collection boxes ready before school lets out for the summer.
This year.. that's comes to more than 1,700 lbs. of supplies that is now available for students in need at Rock House Kids, Rosie's Birthday Club, and other Rockford-area agencies.
