ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A woman allegedly high on drugs causes quite the scare for several families with children in the Rockton and Kinnikinnick school districts. Police say she crashed into the bus sending several kids to the hospital.
The crash happened at Rockton Road just east of Forest Preserve Road. It caused the bus to tip over onto its side. Five kids were on board at the time. The kids, the bus driver, and the driver of the car were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police arrested the driver, 23-year-old Mary Sartino of Rockford. She’s charged with aggravated DUI and is now being held in the Winnebago County Jail. A passerby saw the crash happen and knew she had to stop by to help.
“A couple ladies were already helping the kids out of the bus and a little boy kind of attached himself to me so I sat with him and just tried to help a little bit. That’s all,” said Juanita Schlem.
UPDATE: On Wednesday August 21, 2013 at approximately 8:30a.m. a Rockton school bus, which was westbound on Rockton Rd., was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The crash caused the school bus to flip on its side. The bus was occupied by the driver and five students. All were transported to hospitals for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
The crash took place on Rockton Road, east of Forest Preserve Road.
The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Mary Sartino of Rockford, was also transported to the hospital where she was treated and released.
Sartino has been charged with Aggravated DUI (drugs) and has been lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.

It happened around 8:30 Wednesday morning at Rockton and Forest Preserve Roads.
5 kids and the bus driver were heading west, and the driver of another car was heading east when they collided. The bus tipped over onto its side.
Everyone was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
