Schnucks to Close Alpine and Rural Stores in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Schnucks Markets, Inc. has announced plans to permanently close the Alpine (2514 S. Alpine Road at Harrison, 61108) and Rural (1715 Rural Street, 61107) stores at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014. All 139 teammates (84 at Alpine and 55 at Rural) will be offered positions at neighboring Rockford Schnucks stores prior to the closings.

Company leaders say low sales and the costly operation of these two older, smaller facilities factored heavily into this decision. In addition to the store closings, Schnucks today closed the in-store restaurants and restructured related areas within its two largest stores resulting in the elimination of 15 full- and part-time positions at East State and nine full- and part-time positions at Loves Park.

Schnucks President and CEO Todd Schnuck said, “In order to stay competitive and offer the value our customers want and need, we are discontinuing services currently underutilized by the majority of our customers. Eliminating positions is always a last resort, but these are directly related to the closed functions and could not be absorbed.”

“Our popular pizzerias will remain open and in fact, we are expanding the menu selection. In order to ensure the continuation of excellent dining experiences, the in-store seating areas will remain,” Schnuck said.

The Alpine lease expires July 31, 2014. The Rural location, however, is a Schnucks property managed by The DESCO Group of St. Louis and that team will be seeking a new tenant.

In addition to the 42,000-square-foot Alpine (35 year-old facility) and the 30,000-square-foot Rural (57 year-old facility) locations, Schnucks operates eight other stores in the Rockford area. Alpine customers are within 2.5 miles of Schnucks Rockford Plaza (Charles Street) and within 3.5 miles of Cherry Valley. Rural customers are within 2 miles of Rockford Plaza (Charles Street).
