STATELINE (WIFR) – After years of legal battles, same-sex couples are allowed to be married in the state of Illinois starting next week. Now, some sex-couples are ready to walk down the aisle and to the courthouse to get their marriage licenses.
Lisa and Kristi Breisch already consider themselves married after their civil union ceremony two years ago, but the couple says they’re still excited to make it official by getting a marriage license in Winnebago County on Monday.
Gay marriage is now legal in Illinois staring June 1st allowing dozens of same sex couples like Lisa and Krissti to receive their license.
“This way we get the tax benefits and because we own a business together, that’s really important.”
While the license makes it legal, some local pastors are helping people prepare to celebrate their new rights with a ceremony.
Pastor Eric Lemonholm of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard says he’s officiating two weddings later this year.
For couples like Lisa and Kristi who’ve already had a civil union they’ll be ale to get their marriage license for free.
