Safety Fair Gives Kids Up Close Look At Fire Trucks

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- Some fire trucks were on display on Saturday, giving kids the chance to check them out up close and personal.

It was during a safety fair in Machesney Park. Kids got reminders on everything from crossing the road, to wearing a helmet while riding the bike. The kids also had the chance to check out fire trucks and ambulances, and they even went home with fire fighter helmets.

Crews say it's important for our kids to meet rescuers in settings like this so they're not afraid in an emergency.

"It's intimidating to small children so if they experience it in an event like this it’s comfortable and casual when the true incident happens they know not to be afraid and they're a good guy so it’s a good opportunity to get out and have that happen," North Park Fire Chief Joel Hallstrom, said.

The REACT team also flew into the event this morning to give kids the chance to check out the helicopter.
