ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Country music artist Rodney Atkins is taking to the streets of Rockford tonight as part of the city's two block party.
The stage is up, guitars are lined up and ready to be strummed for the fifth and largest Main Street District block party to date. It's also the first country show with a major headliner, Rodney Atkins.
"I think it's a good image to bring down here, to get people involved. It will kind of start to let people see more of the positive sides of Rockford," said Kayla Broome, who works downtown.
A lot of work is going into this event to get people downtown. About 5,000 people are expected to fill the streets tonight. It's supposed to be fun but also good for businesses.
"The nice thing about these shows is a good 30-40 percent usually drives from an hour plus away so you're going to see a lot of people from out of town coming to downtown Rockford tonight, hopefully hitting a lot of local restaurants on the 500 block and down here of course," said Chris Wachowiak, Main Street District co-organizer and owner of Kryptonite bar.
Lamont Foster says he's happy to see the hard work being poured in to downtown. He says he'd like to see similar events spread throughout the city.
"Community pride is important. When people start believing in their community and having trust and they get active, they want to do things, they want to be a part of something," said Foster.
