ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The East High School Veterans Memorial Committee recently completed a memorial to remember former students who died during World War II, but here's the catch they had $500 left over.
Earlier this evening the committee presented a check for the extra money to the Veterans Drop-In Center in Downtown Rockford. The program currently accommodates between 20 and 30 veterans a day with things like a hot meal, haircuts, entertainment, and counseling. Dustin Long with the veterans committee said along with the new memorial, helping current veterans remains a top priority.
"We thought the best way to honor veterans now is to give to a center now like this drop-in center here that is doing good everyday, for veterans in Rockford," Long said.
Currently the drop-in center is only open from 4:30 to 8:30 each evening but long hopes this money will allow them to extend their hours and possibly add some new additions.
