Rockford to Host New Robotics Competition

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – We've been hearing for quite some time how there are local jobs available in engineering and manufacturing, just not enough qualified candidates. Now Rockford leaders are trying to get people interested in these jobs at a very young age.

Robots were on display tonight at the Rockford Chamber's Celebration of Manufacturing Expo. Industry experts say they're looking for ways to attract younger talent. One way they hope to do that is through a new robotics challenge this summer.

The Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau expects about 400 students from across the Midwest to compete. Local students say they love the challenge.

“You have about six weeks to design and build this robot and practice driving with it and make it functional,” says Winnebago student Kayla Smith. She says, “It's very difficult and it's quite the challenge, but it's very exciting and it's great work.

Rock Valley College is hosting the competition on August 3rd.
