ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Valentine vacation was on the mind of dozens of Stateliners as they just took off in the first Allegiant Air flight from Rockford to Punta Gorda. Those boarding today got special valentine treats including a chance to be on an inflight kiss cam as well as a champagne toast. The Fort Myers area was one of the most popular destinations when the flights were offered at RFD five years ago and Airport Director Mike Dunn tells says this flight has long had a very strong regional pull.
“We have a department here at the airport that tracks where all of our passengers are coming from for each flight. If you look at Fort Myers and Punta Gorda you'll see we're drawing passengers from Madison Wisconsin into the suburbs, over into Iowa. We need to be a Regional Airport. We can't survive simply as a Rockford Airport, as a Winnebago County Airport,” said Dunn.
The flights will run Thursdays and Sundays through April, then the dates are scheduled to change to Wednesdays and Saturdays.
