Rockford Reveals Health Disparities

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) – Winnebago County Children may be more at risk compared to the rest of the State. One report reveals that kids in the county are in trouble when it comes to abuse and neglect.

The Winnebago County Health Department explained today that there are health disparities related to family income level , race, and ethnicity and other factors. According to the Illinois Department of Children and Family services, the average rate of child abuse and neglect in Winnebago County is 18.6 per one thousand, which is more than double the state average of 8.6 per 1,000.

“There has to be more support and guidance and education and connecting, simple connecting, and having some basic support structure in their lives is absolutely critical.”

Although the county is in a worse position than the state, between 2009 and 2013 the number of substantiated cases of abuse and neglect has declined by 17% compared to the preceding three years where it increased by 47%.
