Rockford PBPA Warns Public of Telephone Scam

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The leadership of the Rockford Policemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association (PBPA Unit 6) would like to thank everyone that donated to the “Shop With A Cop” program recently.

The telephone solicitation for the program ended on Friday, December 21, 2012, and the Association was able to provide several area children with the opportunity to shop for Christmas presents with a City of Rockford police officer

The leadership has learned that someone is telephoning residents, and possibly businesses, indicating they are representing PBPA Unit 6 and soliciting donations for the Shop With A Cop program and asking for the checking account number or credit card number for that person, or business, to make a donation.

This is an unauthorized solicitation and most likely a scam to fraudulently obtain funds from the individual or business contacted.

The leadership of PBPA Unit 6 would like to notify residents and businesses in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle and Stephenson County to beware any telephone solicitation for donations to the PBPA Unit 6 “Shop With A Cop” program.
