Rockford Man Sentenced for Illegally Possessing an Assault Rifle

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford man, 34-year-old Robert Gray was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Gray pled guilty in May 2013, saying that on May 8, 2012, having previously been convicted of a felony, he had an SKS Norinco semi-automatic assault rifle with an obliterated serial number and sixteen rounds of ammunition in his possession at his home. Gray also had in his possession $372,993 in U.S. currency, diamond jewelry, six cell phones, a digital scale, a pocket scale, a heat sealer and bags, and plastic grocery bags filled with rubber bands.

The defendant was originally charged in state court and was transferred to federal court where he was charged under tough federal firearms laws as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program.
