ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Now that the brutal winter is over it appears that the Rockford housing market has also escaped from it's deep freeze.
April marked the best month for home sales in the Stateline in half a year. It appears Heather Henderson will be adding to the May sales totals. Heather is a single woman moving back to Rockford from Chicago.
She is taking advantage of Illinois's First-Time Home-buyer Program. It allows first time buyers to receive $75,000 toward the down payment of the home and secure a 3-point-99 percent interest rate on a 30 year fixed mortgage.
"I finally get to buy something. You know I've been renting for years and years so I'm finally kind of getting my foot in that door. So since I am a first time home buyer it's all a new process to me everything is a learning experience so it's, it's been really cool though," Henderson said.
In April 340 homes were sold in the Rockford area in April, that's a 21% increase over last month and an 11% increase over last April. Again it's the highest total for any month since October 2013.
