ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Five years ago Rockford Memorial Hospital was one of the lucky few to receive the Da Vinci Robot. And in that time surgeons have used it to perform more than 1,000 surgeries.
The Da Vinci Robot is part of the robotic surgery program. Surgeons can perform complicated surgeries by looking at a 3D image through the machine. Every surgical move is made by doctors as Da Vinci can't be programmed on its own. In most cases the technology has been used to remove cancerous prostate glands.
There are almost 3,000 Da Vinci Surgical Systems around the world. Doctors say the robot helps reduces the risk of infection and allows patients a faster recovery.
