MADISON (WIFR) – Tim Stephenson wanted a little companionship so he decided to adopt Sassy this summer. Sassy’s ten years old and it’s often hard for shelters to place older dogs. Her age didn’t bother Tim and it turns out this was a match made in heaven.
Tim’s a diabetic and Sassy started being able to notice when Tim’s blood sugar was getting low. She even started waking him up in the middle of the night and bringing his blood sugar meter.
Tim says he’d die without her.
There are dogs trained to help diabetics keep track of their blood sugar. They sense it in their owner’s breath, but Sassy was never trained. She grew up on a farm and somehow learned it on her own.
