WINNEBAGO (WIFR) – A dangerous hoax circulating the Winnebago area this past week has parents on high alert. Someone has been setting off chemical bombs that’s damaging property. We spoke with one of those victims today.
It sounds like gun shots and can be just as dangerous. They’re called “soda bottle bombs”, also known as “Comet bombs”, made with household chemicals.
Chemical residue remains on Theresa Luchini’s front porch after she was the target of a Comet bomb.
“I heard this big ‘bang, bang’ and I woke up suddenly. 10 seconds later, I get a call from girls who were downstairs watching movies late and I got a call from them and they’re like ‘mom, mom we heard gunshots.’”
“I figured someone was dead and the police were going to be here,” Alex Luchini said.
After looking outside and seeing the mess, they realized it was just a hoax.
“This is a serious prank, you could not only hurt someone or damage property, they could hurt themselves. I’ve ding-dong-ditched and little stuff like that, but this is serious. Someone could get hurt.”
Thankfully, no one has after four reported bottle bombs in the Village of Winnebago and two nearby in the county within the last week. However, the same can’t be said for the homes that were hit.
“I’m going to have to get it painted or somehow get it fixed, rip it out…I don’t know and that makes me a little angry.”
Depending on the amount of property damage, if the suspects are caught, they could face anything from a low-level misdemeanor to a felony charge. Police say they do believe the same people are responsible for all the bottle bombs.
