Report: Ogle County Credit Card Bills Altered

OREGON, Ill. (AP) -- A published report says credit card statements from the Ogle County Sheriff's Department were altered several times since 2011.

Sauk Valley Media cites copies of statements obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The changes happened at least three times since 2011.

Ogle County Chairman Kim Gouker says the changes were made to remove personal purchases later paid by employees to the credit card company. Gouker says fraud isn't suspected.

One bill received in December 2011 had a balance that had been covered up and handwritten over to show a balance of $3,990.44. The following month, a bill had a charge crossed out with marker.

It's unclear if the changes violate public records laws. Authorities say if there's an investigation, it'd be conducted by an outside agency.
