FREEPORT (WIFR) – A Freeport man is hoping to raise money to restore the city’s civil war monument. It was built in 1868 and bears the name of more than 3,000 area soldiers who served.
However, the monument has started to crumble and quite a few of the stones need to be replaced. The contractor “Renaissance Restoration” started making some of those repairs this week, but they can only keep working as long as they’re funded. So far, the community has donated $20,000 to the civil war monument fund. They need $50,000 more.
To donate, you can visit the Citizens State Bank in Freeport, Lena, or Stockton.
