ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- For a lot of us, math was one of the hardest subjects in school, but hundreds of kids are making it look easy. 600 students compete for the top award at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Competition.
600 students from 27 area high schools were put through a series of tests. Some of the tests the students had to take individually, while other tests were able to be taken in groups. Today's competition is one of 21 taking place throughout the state. Teachers say no matter what the outcome is the competition is great for student's to put on their college transcripts.
"I always tell my students to put on your college application that you're part of math team. All my kids will get a letter of recommendation from me for whatever college they want to go to," says Jai Sharma, Woodstock High School math coach.
Today's winners have not yet been announced. The state finals competition will take place on May 3rd at the University of Illinois Champagne.
