ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Gay rights advocates are hoping same-sex marriage isn’t that far off in Illinois.
That’s why a few dozen Stateliners rallied today outside State Representative Chuck Jefferson’s office this afternoon. Jefferson is one of the few local lawmakers who says he hasn’t decided where he stands on the issue of same sex-marriage. A spokeswoman tells us Jefferson wants to hear from his constituents before he makes up his mind.
Organizer Bob Black hopes he can help persuade him.
Representative Jefferson has been a consistent no-vote for equality in Illinois. We wanted a chance to get out here and show him that he has constituents here who believe in equality,” said Black.
The House never took up gay marriage during the Spring session because the bill’s backers felt they didn’t have enough support.
Jefferson voted against authorizing civil unions when that law passed in November of 2010.
