RSO and RVC Announce Concerto Competition Winners

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The Rockford Symphony Orchestra and Rock Valley College announces the 2013 Concerto Competition winners. The annual event offered music students aged 13-21 the opportunity to compete for three cash awards and a featured performance with the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) on their spring 2013 concert.

First Prize ($350) was awarded to Kristiana McCombs, cello, from Rockford, IL. She performed the Allegro movement from Concerto No. 1 in G Minor op.49 by Dmitri Kabalevsky. Joanna studies with Richard Evans. She is a principal cello for the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra and also performs with the Sterling String Quartet. Kristiana will perform with the RSYO on the April 21, 2013 Spring Concert at the Hononegah High School Performing Arts Center.

Second Prize ($250) was awarded to Thomas Wu, clarinet from Roscoe, IL. Thomas performed the first movement of the Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minior, op. 73 by Carl M. Von Weber. Thomas attends the Illinois Math and Science Academy.

Third Prize ($150) was awarded to Ella Caswell, of Stockton, IL. Ella performed the Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15 by Ludwig van Beethoven.
