ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Negotiations with District 205 and its teachers union will continue tomorrow--this is after the REA overwhelming rejected a final offer by administration.

More than a thousand teachers gathered at Guilford High School over the weekend to vote on the proposal--just five people voted for the contract.

One REA member says the district wants elementary school teachers to work one extra hour a day and attend one additional meeting a week with no extra compensation. However teachers at the high school level would get a 20 percent increase in pay to work extra hours, with the addition of the seventh period.

When it comes to health care, the district wants to double premiums, so for a single teacher it would increase from $25 to $50. For the family plan it would increase from about $89 to $178.

There would also be something similar to a cap in place. The district would pay $12,800 dollars per employee per year for healthcare and with about 1,800 teachers, that's a little more than 23 million dollars a year. If teachers spend more than that amount, they would have to pay more in premiums the following year.

If the union does not accept a contract from the district, the district would contribute less to employee pensions.

REA President Karen Bieschke said, "Teachers are not asking for exorbitant amounts of money and they're willing to pay more for benefits, yes their insurance, so we're looking at containing costs and then moving forward and doing the best job we can in the classroom."

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Education Association has overwhelmingly voted against a final contract submitted by District 205.

Hundreds of teachers gathered with ballots at Guilford High School today to go over the proposal from school administrators. The main stumbling blocks are health care costs, teacher salaries, a longer school day and class size. REA President Karen Bieschke says what the district is offering is not a fair contract.

Karen Bieschke, REA President, says, "Teachers play a critical role in the education of our children and they set the standard for our entire community and without well-educated and compensated professionals, who will we attract in the future, how will we have the best and the brightest."

Both the REA and District 205 will continue negotiations on Tuesday.
