ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Downtown Rockford buildings are looking the way they should, clear of any graffiti. Actually the number of cases has dropped in the last 6 years and local business owners thank the city for the quick and easy fix.
A fresh coat of paint never smelled better for several downtown business owners. They say even though they were hit with graffiti recently, it’s all a thing of the past, thanks to the public works department.
Most vandalized buildings have been cleaned. City workers are taking matters into their own hands by driving through downtown and other areas to find graffiti themselves and those efforts are paying off.
So far this year, workers cleaned up 175 cases, compared to nearly 355 cases this time last year. Alderman Karen Elyea says she appreciates the quick response to help spruce up Rockford’s image.
“I think it’s important to clean it up right away. I think that helps discourage from being put back up again if they see all of their efforts immediately covered up.
Rockford Operations Manager says there’s less gang graffiti. It usually takes the city at least 3 days to clean it up. Once they receive a call from the graffiti hotline.
Several people have been arrested for tagging buildings. They might not face jail time, but they’re ordered to pay restitution which could be between $800-$4,000.
