Freeport residents are making sure their neighborhoods are safe.
That's with the help of HomeSmart which hosted a Public Safety fair at the Stephenson county farm bureau. Firefighters offered fire safety tips like a fire escape plan for kids and how to install smoke detectors, while police showed residents how to keep your home safe from robberies.
Residents could even make their own home emergency kit for free which included blankets and flashlights.
"I think it's important because it happens all the time. A lot of us don't know what to do when something happens and we need some guidance to be able to know where to go and what to do, and what we have on hand,” said Earline Scott.
HomeSmart plans to have another community fair soon which will focus on home maintenance.
