Program Celebrates YouthBuild Day

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Leaders of a program that helps Rockford dropouts get their lives back on track say they feel like they’re making a difference.

The Rockford Branch is joining in celebrating national Youth Build Day. The organization started in New York back in 1978. Here, the program helps low-income teens who aren’t in school anymore train for jobs by fixing up homes.

"I don't live far from here but every time I come here, I know 50 people that live past here but every time I can look past it and say, 'I worked on that house.' That's part of what I did for the community,” said volunteer, Raymond Porter.

The students have constructed 46 homes in Rockford since the program started.
