WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- There's some concern in a Winnebago County neighborhood after contaminants were found in two of its water wells. Now neighbors are questioning their health.

Winnebago County resident William Mareth received a flyer last week from the Winnebago County Health Department.

"There could be something wrong and we'd like to know about it," says Mareth.

The paper warns neighbors of Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC's) in the groundwater; simply put, contamination.

Mareth says, "I'm not happy about it; we've been drinking (the water) all along."

The area in question is the neighborhood near Cottonwood Airport off Auburn St. The Winnebago County Health Department says two private wells on the same undisclosed street were contaminated.

"What are they going to do about it?," says Mareth's daughter Kathy Collins.

Collins lives next door and while she drinks bottled water, she can't completely escape the well.

"It's absorbed of course through the skin, and the pets, I've got dogs and cats and you wonder how it's affecting them too," explains Collins.

The health department will try to answer some of those questions as it continues to investigate the extent and direction of the contaminate.

An informational meeting is being held from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. tonight, August 2nd, at the Northwest Community Center at 1325 N. Johnston Ave. in Rockford.
