POPLAR GROVE (WIFR) -- At the most recent meeting of the Kishwaukee Region of the IPA, Dr. Sharon Olds, Assistant Superintendent and Poplar Grove Principal, was named the region's Elementary Principal of the Year.
The Horace Mann/IPA Elementary Principal of the Year is a program to recognize excellence among elementary and middle level principals. To be honored, principals must demonstrate a positive impact on education and advocacy for children and a commitment to the principalship. They must be highly respected by students, colleagues, and the community. They must maintain an orderly and purposeful learning environment and show strong leadership by setting high standards for staff and students. Principals must assume an active leadership role in the community and lead in a school in which commitment is clearly evident through programs designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students through firmly established community ties with parents and local business associations.
Dr. Olds was nominated for this award due to her work with the Boone/Winnebago Regional Office of Education and the Belvidere Chamber of Commerce as well as her commitment to working with students of all levels in her building. Dr. Olds chairs the English/Language Arts Committee in addition to planning and organizing all professional development for the district. Dr. Belcastro, Principal at North Boone Upper Elementary and Middle School, said this about Dr. Olds, "Sharon goes out of her way to make people feel special and a part of the team. She is honest and fair and cares deeply about her students and staff."
Dr. Olds will be recognized at the Kishwaukee Region's annual golf outing which will be held at the Red Tail Golf Club in Crystal Lake, IL on June 19, 2013. As the regional winner of this award she is eligible to receive the state award at the annual IPA Fall Convention in October of 2013.
