Police Endorse Weber for Winnebago County State's Attorney

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Local police unions say they don't normally get involved in politics, but this year they've decided to endorse Glen Weber, the Republican Candidate for Winnebago County State's Attorney. Unions representing the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Rockford Police, and Loves Park Police have all voted to support Glen Weber. Weber says it’s no surprise because he has more experience than the current state's attorney, Joe Bruscato.

Today, Weber even went so far as to blame Bruscato for Rockford's crime problem. He says police are fed up with Bruscato's lack of experience and his unwillingness to be tough on crime. Weber says people have lost confidence in the State's Attorney's office and police officers are tired of seeing their hard work go unnoticed, especially when cases are dismissed or plea-bargained down.

“The increase in crime is directly correspondent to the state's attorney’s incompetence in handling these types of cases,” said candidate Glen Weber.

"People are going to say what they wish to try to win an election and this is the same individual that three weeks ago was disciplined by the Illinois Supreme Court for prosecutorial misconduct. It's arguments like these that got him sanctioned,” said Bruscato.

Bruscato says he has been tough on crime, and his record speaks for itself. The sanctions he was talking about refer to improper statements Weber made to juries in four criminal cases between 1999 and 2003.

After speaking with police officers, they say they feel like they are being ignored. They say they will present evidence on a case one day, and the next day they will find out it's not being prosecuted. But, whether the evidence is there is the prosecutor's call.
