ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- On Saturday, May 18, 2013, the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners answered questions regarding the program, Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR). The goal of PAR is to help channel the home gardener’s overabundance of zucchini, cucumbers,
tomatoes (and more!) to area food pantries, so that our neighbors in our community who are struggling with hunger have access to healthy, fresh produce.
To encourage people to participate in this effort, Master Gardeners gave away more than 300 vegetable and herb plants, as well as seed packets, to those backyard gardeners who are willing to grow the
plants and donate produce back to Rockford’s food pantries. It's part of the Plant for a Promise initiative.
Plants were given away to the following area nurseries:
Cherry Valley Garden Center -104 Enders Drive, Cherry Valley
Didier Greenhouse – 4601 W. State St, Rockford
Rock Valley Greenhouse – 785 N. Bell School Road, Rockford
Village Green on N. Main – 2640 N. Main St, Rockford
Wayne’s Feed Store – 3435 Auburn St, Rockford
