ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Some Rockford aldermen are hoping a local development firm can bring the city more money with a proposed multi-million dollar shopping center on Perryville Road.

First Rockford Group's proposed will bring in retailers that would be new to rockford, and some aldermen say that could draw more shoppers in from out of town.

55 acres of land lay empty now at the intersection of Perryville and Rote roads, but not if the developer gets the city's okay. The group wants permission from aldermen to build the center. We're told it would be anchored by a grocery and merchandise superstore. Some aldermen say new retailers would receive tax incentives for opening in the stateline, and some shoppers say they are most interested in the economic impact.

"Rockford has always been a blue-collar town, so if there's work, there's people that are going to do it," said Roger McGee of Poplar Grove. "They're not going to spend money just to spend money. So if it's good bargains, good prices, it'll work. If it's high priced stuff, odds are it's not going to work."

Some people in the area say they're excited about the potential of having newer stores come into the area. However, one home owner said he's worried the project may actually hurt the value of his home. He said if that happens, he'll may condsider moving out of the area.

Some aldermen say they will know more about the project tomorrow.
