Patrols Make Sure Boaters Obey No Wake Restrictions in Winnebago Co.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The water levels on the Rock River continue to drop, however, boaters still aren't allowed in some portions of the water in Winnebago County.

23 News hit the water with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department Sunday afternoon. Deputies say we can still spend time on the water, but boats cannot kick up any wake. That means water skiing and tubing aren't allowed. The department is patrolling the water to make sure boaters are following the rules and remain safe while enjoying the water.

“There is a lot of debris. In the higher water levels, the debris breaks loose and there’s a lot of debris in the river so we really don’t want people water skiing, it’s for their own safety. . The waves create problems also; they bring the water level up into the homes. It can cause all sorts of problems inside the residences along the river," says Sgt.Paul Lipinski with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department

In addition to the no wake zone in Winnebago County, boaters are not allowed on the river between the State Street Bridge and the Fordam Dam. In Ogle County, the no wake zone has been lifted.
