Parents Asked for Input on Dist. 205 Middle School Improvements

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Parents in the Rockford Public School District are getting a say in what improvements they'd like to see at the middle schools. The district is holding its first of four public input meetings, tonight at Flinn Middle School from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Patricia Scanlon teaches math at Flinn Middle School, the same school her son will attend next year. As a parent and teacher, Scanlon says she'd like to see some improvements.

"Students are going to be going out into this big, wide world of technology and it seems like it's hard to do that in the middle school with limited resources. So if we could get technology to improve and have the technology in the kids' hands," says Scanlon.

That is the kind of feedback District 205 wants as it creates goals for all of its middle schools.

"We're talking about the teaching and learning and the essential student outcomes. Not just what we teach, but how we teach, how we support our families and parents and community," explains Chip Hickman, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.

The district is looking for ideas from parents on how they can improve the middle schools, so specific goals are still in the process of being created.

Hope Cantwell teaches English and Reading at Flinn. She says she'd like more professional development opportunities.

"As educators we're constantly learning and we need to keep improving ourselves in order to improve our teaching for our students, as well as improve our student learning," says Cantwell.

Both Cantwell and Scanlon say parent involvement also needs to improve.

"Everybody is always saying they don't have a voice, well this is your chance to have a voice," says Scanlon.

Tonight's meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at Flinn Middle School located at 2525 Ohio Parkway. They'll have food, childcare and transportation for people who need it. Call 815-489-7264 to reserve your spot or to get transportation.
