Over 80 Tickets, Arrests in Belvidere State-Funded Traffic Stops

BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- Under 80 percent of traffic stops made due to a state grant by Belvidere Police around Fourth of July weekend resulted in tickets or arrests.

Police say they received funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety to hire off-duty officers from June 23 to July 6 for extra patrols. It's through the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP Grant. Out of 104 traffic stops, 80 ended in tickets or arrests.

The break-down includes:
3 - seat belt
5 - DUI
12 - uninsured
10 - speeding
9 - equipment
9 - suspended/revoked/unlicensed
1 - other drivers' license
10 - moving
6 - registration
5 - curfew
5 - drugs
3 - BAC over .08
2 - illegal transportation of alcohol

Belvidere police officers will continue with targeted traffic enforcement in the coming months.
