ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The start of the New Year was supposed to mean a new driver's license facility on Rockford’s west side. The one at Auburn and Central closed suddenly in July; drivers protested and were promised a new one in 2013 but will have to wait a few more months to see a ribbon cutting.
23 News has learned the planned facility inside the old Gray’s on Auburn Street won't open until March. The Secretary of State himself said the office would open in January. No word on what's caused this delay, however, construction on the building's interior is ongoing. Drivers on the city's west side say they're frustrated that they have to wait even longer for services.
"To have us wait when they told us it would be coming soon, it's really unfair to us to have to keep waiting,” says Chyla Tate. “What are they doing to do? Push it off again and make us wait even longer? When are we going to get service over here on the west side?
Three full time workers from other locations will staff the new Auburn Street branch. It is smaller than the old facility at Auburn and Central but drivers will still be able to renew their license here and register to vote.
