Police say this all took place in a parking lot on 9th Street. A large group of people is said to have gathered in the area around 3:00 Sunday morning. Things got out of hand and someone fired into the group, hitting two men. Smiley was pronounced dead at the scene. Police tell us Anthony Riggs, of Belvidere showed up a few hours later at a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No one is in custody for the shootings. A few neighbors say they were upset and shaken up over the incident.

Neighbors say they heard about 8 shots and think as many as 17 cars and more than 20 people were in the lot. Police are still trying to figure out why the group picked that spot.

Usually the violent crimes unit would investigate a murder, but since the murder happened in District 2, a team of detectives from District 2 is on the case. If any evidence points to a gang motive or drugs, it will be handed over to the gang unit or narcotics team.
