Officers Crack Down Over Holiday Weekend

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Whether you're getting up early for Black Friday, or driving home after dinner Thursday night, police will be out in full force to make sure the roads are safe. Illinois State Police launched its "Drive to Survive" campaign today. Over the four-day Thanksgiving holiday last year, state police caught almost 3,000 drivers speeding and nearly 200 driving drunk. Despite their best efforts, two people were killed in traffic accidents. That's why they say they're not taking any chances this year.

“A fatality during any time of the year is a tragedy. An absolute tragedy. During the holidays, it seems to be even worse, because this is something you're going to remember during this holiday. It's a holiday every single year.”

To make the roads a little easier to navigate, IDOT will suspend non-emergency construction projects, including I-90 from Rockton Road to the Stateline. You can find the complete list here.
