LOVES PARK (WIFR) – The Loves Park Police Department has a secret weapon when it comes to sniffing out crime in the Stateline.
Rico is a 4-year-old German Shepherd K-9 dog originally from the Czech Republic. He’s been teamed up with Officer Erik Meadors since August of 2012. After 10 weeks of intense training in Springfield, the two are inseparable and the results have been unbelievable.
Just last year, Rico was responsible for the retrieval of $16,000 in cash, 9 guns, 17 vehicles, and about $110,000 worth of pot, cocaine, and heroin. Rico is also certified in building searches and apprehension.
According to Meadors, K-9 dogs are able to find suspected criminals by picking up on their scent and telling police where they were hiding.
Rico did 185 narcotic sniffs in 2013 and he was also out on a sniff when we conducted a ride-along with Officer Meadors recently. We’ll have more from the ride-a-long tonight on the 23 News Update at 10.
