North Boone Teacher Recognized as WGN-TV's Teacher of the Month

POPLAR GROVE (WIFR) -- WGN-TV’s “Teacher of the Month,” recognizing exceptional teachers for their contributions both inside and outside of the classroom, will profile Brad Breakfield of North Boone Upper Elementary School in Poplar Grove in an upcoming segment on WGN News at Nine. The series, reported by WGN News reporter Muriel Clare, WGN–TV profiles one outstanding teacher each month. As part of this honor, Mr. Breakfield will receive a $1,000 honorarium which he may use to purchase things for his classroom. At this time, Mr. Breakfield hopes to purchase four e-Readers to use as a literacy center in his classroom.

Mr. Brad Breakfield is a 5th and 6th grade reading, language arts, and social studies teacher at North Boone Upper Elementary School in Poplar Grove. He uses individualized learning centers to help students in reading and writing, including many forms of electronic and virtual media. Mr. Breakfield partners with another teacher in the building for a literature circle project that involves students making ornaments, developing book jackets, decorating book trees, and hosting an open house for families to hear presentations on their books. Mr. Breakfield also coaches the 8th grade girls basketball team at the NBMS.

Mr. Breakfield was nominated by 6th grader Morgaine Olsen, who was in his class last year as well as this year. In her nomination form she says, "Mr. B makes me, and lots of other students want to be our best. He knows that we all have bad days, and he helps us to accept that and get back to work."

Any teacher, who is currently employed by a school (grades K-12) in Chicagoland or Northwest Indiana area can be nominated by any student living in Chicago or Northwest Indiana who is 13 years or older. Children under the age of 13 are still eligible to participate by having his or her parent or legal guardian complete the form. The Teacher of the Month is chosen based upon his or her educational achievements in the classroom, innovative teaching techniques and unique contributions made in the community.
