ROCK FALLS (WIFR) -- An emergency situation in Whiteside County tonight, after the City of Rock Falls Sanitation Department experiences an infrastructure failure.

Nearly 9,000 people in the City of Rock Falls are being asked not to use their bathrooms or laundry facilities. Right now, the Rock Falls Water Department has shut off all service to the city in an effort to prevent any more damage to the sanitation system.

Officials say residents who are on private wells should not use the sanitation system. It’s unclear when water service will be restored.

The Whiteside County Health Department has order all schools, businesses, restaurants and bars to temporarily close because of the sanitation situation.

An emergency operation center has been set up at the Rock Falls City Hall, 603 W. 10th Street. City officials are working to set up bathrooms and a water distribution center.

Rock Falls officials say updates will be posted on community service TV channel 5.
