ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford's newest firefighter were put to the test, after they were sent into a smokey house.
This was only a test for the City of Rockford's ten new fire recruits and one firefighter from Byron. The smoke is man-made and there are no flames inside this home along West State Street, which is set for demolition. Rockford Fire Department Division Chief Matthew Knott says this allows the rookies to get hands on training and experience what it's likes on the scene of a real house fire.
"The work that they are doing is real. The idea here is that it can simulate any kind of real scenario that they would encounter in the real world. So, we're learning different techies for ventilation and we're learning how to use the different tools and how to work safely with everything," Knott said.
The new recruits will be in training for 16 weeks.
