ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A Rockford Public School building that has sat empty for nearly a year, could finally have some new tenants. You may recall the district closed Page Park last year and moved those kids to new alternative education programs. Now RPS wants to lease the building, to house more students.
They want to lease the building to the regional office of education, which would use the facility for its alternative education programs. They want to consolidate the regional learning academy and regional learning center, into one site. They currently lease space in two separate churches. The move will also allow the regional office to take in more students.
“We’re hoping to grow these programs, the need is out there and we are ready to expand we just needed the room,” said Linda Oshita , the Assistant Regional Superintendent for Boone/Winnebago Counties.
There are about 100 students in both programs combined. If they get Page Park, the goal is to expand and hopefully offer summer programming by next summer.
The school board still has to vote on this lease agreement which is expected to happen in two weeks. If approved, the programs would move into the Page Park building in the fall.
