WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- More than 100 people overdosed on heroin in Winnebago County in 2012. Now a new drug could help save dozens of lives of those battling an addiction.
Winnebago County is part of the pilot program for addicts to use Vivitrol. It's a non-addictive drug that reduces cravings and blocks the effects of opiates. 18 people are in the program through the county's drug court... Where they receive a monthly shot of the substance. Counselors say they hope this drug can help fight the addiction growing in our community.
"My hope is that more people will have access to this opportunity. I know that the clients I've talked to who are participating in this are grateful, they indicate that it's almost like a miracle drug," said Bridget Kiely.
Taking Vivitrol is a voluntary program which also includes other drug court requirements like intensive counseling and meetings.
